REQUIREMENTS
FOR CERTIFICATION

Certification
by the ABPNS is time-limited and for a duration of 10 years. Thereafter,
recertification will be required
to maintain certification.

- Certification
by the American Board of Neurological Surgery or the Royal College of
Physicians and Surgeons of Canada and:
- Submission of
surgical logs confirming that 75% of the operative cases were in patients
ages 21 and under, or that 125 operative cases were in patients
ages 12 and under, for the 12 months preceding the application if
first time applicant or for preceding 60 months if applying
via alternate pathway. The case log submitted must represent the
location of the applicants practice at the time ABPNS Certification
is awarded.
- Once creteria 1-3 have
been met the applicant will be qualified to sit for the written exam.
A passing score on the ABPNS Written Examination is required for
certification. Applicants may sit for the ABPNS
Written Examination a total of three times. If unsuccessful after
a third attempt, the applicant may take an oral examination. Failure
of the oral examination requires re-application for further consideration.

of application documents are: October 1st for the written examination
in June, and April 1st for the written examination at the Pediatric
Section Meetings. Your application will be processed and presented
to the Board at its meeting in November/December and June respectively.
You will be notified by the board’s Secretary shortly thereafter
as to your eligibility to sit for the exam

After Submission
of Application:
- Applications
will be reviewed initially by the Credentials Committee and subsequently
by the Board of Directors at the Board Meetings in June, and at
the AANS/CNS Joint Section for Pediatric Neurosurgery winter
meeting.
- After the Board Meeting,
candidates will be notified by the Board Secretary of eligibility
to sit for the written examination at the next test date 5-6 months
hence.
- The written examination
is held twice a year: 1) in June and 2) at the winter meeting of
the AANS/CNS Joint Section for Pediatric Neurosurgery.
- New certificates will be mailed by the Board Secretary to candidates who pass the Written Examination.
CERTIFICATION
PROCESS: via
Alternate Pathway
The
Board of Directors may, at its own discretion, offer certification
to senior pediatric neurological surgeons who have met certification
standards as stated above in items 2 and 3, and whose application has
been approved by both the Credentials Committee and the Board of Directors.
These candidates for certification must pass the written examination
given on an annual basis by the ABPNS prior to the awarding of certification
by the ABPNS. The applicant must have been in the practice of pediatric
neurosurgery for at least 10 years and must submit case logs indicating
a practice consistent with requirements 3 above for each of the past
five years.
